T.M.I.

Back before i was born, the boys who'd never sleep with me were even hotter.
[see photo]
Now that #1 record has made its way back into maximum rotation on the old boombox i'm finally understanding why a generation of women had crushes on alex chilton and chris bell.

i'm so sick of basement bullshit rock...
for today.
all i want is stellar guitar solos and the back-to-back of "when my baby's beside me" and "my life is right."

pair that with this. last night's bookstore score.
a record i know well but never owned.
it's no wonder i'm feeling
summertime randy.

there are few records whose opening notes
are, to me, more atmospheric, mythic, and just plain sexy than let love in.

i'm guessing this plays a part in why all those older
goth ladies i know are so hot?
a crew of scorpios dressed like burlesque dancers.
i miss those dames.

Drag City begins a journal

really? huh.
wonder if it's any good.
i'm guessing it's lyrically cagey but tender and evocative, laden with sparse guitar lines and off-kilter vocals.
oh, wait....nevermind.

moonlitMOONLIT
Issue #1
Book (46pp)
MoonLit is a new arts journal whose inaugural issue is a knockout combination of writing and artwork including crossover talents from the new music scene along with poetry’s rising stars. MoonLit is the brainchild of two Naropa University writing program alums, poets Lisa Janssen and Claire McMahon. Not finding anything they liked in the existing crop of “new” journals, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They obeyed no stylistic limitations and gathered together a far flung group of fourteen contributors from all walks of creative endeavor including David Berman, Neil Hagerty, Gillian McCain, Bill Callahan, Bill Berkson, Eleni Sikelianos, Philip Jenks and others. These parts equal a whole that is wild and fun, heartbreaking and strange. And a quick read at that.

p.s. Criticism is actually much cooler when i don't need a secret decoder ring to know what it's aimed at.
Who are the existing crop of "new" journals that's supposedly getting spanked by this one?
Send me your top five guesses.
I'll choose my favorites and the winner will recieve a copy of...something.
It'll be good.

In the meantime, if you've seen MoonLit [O' blended capitals] let me know if i should shell out the $7.

*thanks to Herr Eyeball for the tip.

escape

This piece was once true.
People eventually left Hope for the obtuse triangle: Broadway, Westminster, Harris, Valley, Manton and Eagle.
If i remember, they even made a short stretch of Friendship a two-way street. At least in the blocks by the bars.

...then Mina Loy came along and started talking about virgins all the time and lit a bunch of stuff on fire...

Human Cylinders

The human cylinders
Revolving in the enervating dust
That wraps each closer in the mystery
Of singularity
Among the litter of a sunless afternoon
Having eaten without tasting
Talked without communion
And at least two of us
Loved a very little
Without seeking
To know if our two miseries
In the lucid rush-together of automatons
Could form one opulent well-being

Simplifications of men
In the enervating dusk
Your indistinctness
Serves me to the cocre of the kernel of you
When in the frenzied reaching-out of intellect to intellect
Leaning brow to brow       communicative
Over the abyss of the potential
Concordance of respiration
Shames
Absence of corresponding between the verbal sensory
And reciprocity
Of conception
And expression
Where each extrudes beyond the tangible
One thin pale trail of speculation
From among us we have sent out
Into the enervating dusk
One little whining beast
Whose longing
Is to slink back to antediluvian burrow
And one elastic tentacle of intuition
To quiver among the stars

The impartiality of the absolute
Routs    the polemic
Or which of us
Would not
Receiving the holy-ghost
Catch it   and caging
  Lose it
Or in the problematic
Destroy the Universe
With a solution.
